Why You Might Be Gaining Weight (Even When You’re Eating Well)
Make it stand out
If you feel like you’re eating well, making better choices, and still gaining weight, you’re not imagining it.
This is something so many women experience, especially in their late 30s and 40s. And it’s incredibly frustrating because it feels like the harder you try, the less your body responds.
But this isn’t about lack of effort or because you’re “doing it wrong.” Your body is simply responding to deeper changes
What could really be causing weight gain?
Weight gain isn’t just about calories. There are several things happening beneath the surface:
Hormonal shifts
As hormones change (especially during perimenopause), the body becomes more prone to storing fat, particularly around the middle.
Blood sugar imbalance
Even “healthy” foods can spike blood sugar if meals aren’t balanced leading to fat storage, cravings, and energy dips.
Stress hormones
When cortisol is elevated, the body is more likely to hold onto weight, especially around the abdomen.
Under-eating or inconsistent eating
Skipping meals or not eating enough protein can slow metabolism and make weight loss harder.
Gut health + inflammation
A sluggish or inflamed gut can impact how your body processes food, stores fat, and regulates hormones.
Why eating less isn’t the answer
Many women respond to weight gain by:
Cutting calories
Skipping meals
Eating less and less
But this often makes things worse. Your body doesn’t feel safe so it holds onto energy (fat) even more.
What actually works
Instead of restriction, the focus should be on supporting the body:
Eat balanced meals (protein, fats, fibre)
Stabilise blood sugar throughout the day
Strength-based movement + walking
Support the nervous system (reduce internal stress)
Focus on consistency, not extremes
Your body isn’t working against you.
It’s trying to protect you.
Once you start working with it instead of against it, things begin to shift.
If you’re struggling with weight gain and feel like nothing is working anymore, this is exactly what I help women with.
Through simple, realistic changes, we bring the body back into balance so weight loss feels natural again.
