Why Do I Feel Anxious for No Reason? (And What Your Body Might Be Trying to Tell You)

You wake up feeling on edge.
Your heart feels a little faster.
Your mind is racing… but nothing is actually wrong.

You ask yourself:
“Why do I feel anxious for no reason?”

If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone, you are among many women who feel exactly the same.

This is something I hear all the time from the women I work with.

They’re doing everything “right” - eating well, trying to look after themselves, getting (some) sleep…

But still feel:

• wired
• on edge
• unsettled

And it’s confusing, because life doesn’t look that stressful on the outside. No one can see how they’re feeling or understand why they feel this way.

As a women’s health coach, instead of focusing on just one symptom, I help my clients understand how things like blood sugar, gut health, hormones and stress are all connected and what their body is actually trying to tell them.

Because often, it’s not just one issue - it’s a pattern.

So…why does this happen?

Most people are told anxiety is purely mental.

“You’re overthinking”
“You need to relax”
“It’s just stress”

But the truth is - anxiety can be physical too.

1. Blood sugar imbalances

If your blood sugar is constantly rising and crashing (from skipping meals, relying on quick carbs, or not eating enough protein), your body can go into a stress response.

This can feel like:

  • anxiety

  • shakiness

  • irritability

  • a racing heart

Even when nothing is actually wrong.

2. Chronic stress (even low-level)

You don’t have to feel “stressed” for your body to be in stress mode.

A busy lifestyle, constant thinking, always being “on”… keeps your nervous system activated

Which can show up as:

  • feeling on edge

  • poor sleep

  • anxiety without a clear trigger

3. Gut health imbalances

Your gut and brain are closely connected.

A large amount of serotonin (your “feel good” chemical) is produced in the gut.

So if your gut is struggling, you might notice:

  • anxiety

  • low mood

  • bloating

  • feeling “off” after eating

Even if you’ve never linked the two.

For some women, anxiety can also be linked to gut issues like coeliac disease or ongoing digestive stress.

I’ve written more about that here → The Hidden Link Between Coeliac Disease, Anxiety & Low Mood.

4. Hormonal changes

Hormones play a huge role in how calm or anxious you feel.

Fluctuations, especially in your 30s and 40s - can affect:

  • mood

  • sleep

  • stress tolerance

Making anxiety feel like it’s come out of nowhere.

5. Poor sleep (even if you’re getting “enough”)

You can be in bed for 7–8 hours and still wake up feeling anxious.

Because it’s not just about how long you sleep, it’s about the quality of that sleep.

If your body is in a constant state of stress, you may:

  • struggle to switch off

  • wake during the night

  • wake feeling wired instead of rested

Which leaves your nervous system heightened the next day.

Why this matters

If you only look at anxiety as something mental…you miss what your body is actually trying to tell you.

And that’s why so many women feel stuck.

What actually helps

Instead of pushing through or trying to “fix” yourself, it’s about supporting your body in the right way.

Simple things can make a big difference:

  • eating balanced meals (protein, fats, fibre)

  • not skipping meals

  • reducing reliance on caffeine

  • supporting your gut

  • allowing proper rest and downtime

Often it’s not just one change, it’s how everything works together.

So how can health coaching help?

It’s not about being given a strict plan and told to stick to it.

And it’s not about being judged or made to feel like you’re doing things wrong.

For most of the women I work with, it starts with understanding what’s really going on in their body.

Looking at things like:

  • energy

  • digestion

  • stress

  • sleep

  • hormones

And then gently connecting the dots.

Because often, it’s not just one issue.

It’s a pattern.

From there, we build simple, realistic changes that fit into your life, not overwhelm it.

So instead of constantly second guessing yourself…

You start to feel:

  • calmer

  • clearer

  • more in control

  • more like yourself again

You’re not “just anxious”

You’re not broken.
And this isn’t something you just have to live with.

Your body is communicating with you.

And once you understand what it’s saying… things can begin to shift.

If this sounds like you…

Feeling anxious, tired or out of balance, even when you’re trying your best- can be frustrating.

You don’t have to figure it out on your own.
